Delaware State Police Cpl. Stephen Ballard mourned nationwide

Police and rescue agencies across our region, and across the country, are turning to social media to express condolences for fallen Delaware State Police Cpl. Stephen Ballard.

Ballard was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Wawa store in Bear, Delaware on Wednesday.

"He leaves behind his wife, Louise, a daughter, and a loving family and scores of loyal colleagues," said Gov. John Carney at a news conference on Thursday.

The suspect in the shooting was killed by police on Thursday morning after a nearly day-long standoff at his home in Middletown.

Ballard had been on the force for more than eight years, according to state police spokesman Sgt. Richard Bratz, and served in Troop 2.
