The South Australia Police have some new four legged recruits in training.

Four puppies have officially begun their "career development" as potential police dogs for the South Australia Police Dog Operations Unit.

The 10-week-old German Shepherds - Axe, Arko, Ash and Archie - are the first litter of potential police dogs sired by retired police dog Oscar.

"Police Dog Oscar was a very opinionated and strong willed dog and his pups are no different," said Senior Sergeant Kurt Newcombe, the Operations Manager of the Dog Operations Unit.

The South Australia Police currently has 12 active General Purpose Dogs and 11 Labrador Retrievers.
