Skimmers hit ATMs in Media and Glen Mills

MEDIA, Pa. (WPVI) -- Police are looking for the suspects who placed skimmers on ATMs in Media and Glen Mills in Delaware County recently.

Both were found on Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union machines.

George Brown, the financial crimes supervisor with Franklin Mint Credit Union, says skimming is a growing crime that's difficult to stop.

Crooks use card readers to steal information from your card.

Brown says within a matter seconds, they can have data from your credit or debit card, giving them access to thousands of dollars.

"They are getting your 16 digit number, they are possibly getting your zip code, they could possibly get your PIN number," said Brown.

But in this case, crystal clear surveillance images caught two suspects in the act.

"I think they are going to continue until they get caught," said Brown.

The two ATMs targeted were on West State Street in Media and on Wilmington Pike in the Glen Mills area.

One thing really noticeable is that the two caught on camera look extremely young.

The crime took place the weekend of April 29th after both branches were closed.

The devices were on the machines for less than 36 hours, but it was enough time for the crooks to make thousands of dollars in illegal transactions. Franklin says fewer than 250 cards were compromised, and says the cards were quickly closed.

The credit union does not believe the suspects are locals and say they may be part of a larger theft ring.

"I truly believe he is not the only person doing this. I think he is part of a larger group that is going around this area and tri-state area and possibly across the country. They are very mobile, they probably had their own card making studio on their car while they are going state to state, hitting different ATMs," Brown said.
