PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- If you're always on the hunt for ways to save, there are some simple and clever little tricks you can use every single time you shop.

First, if there's an item on sale, but it's sold out you can ask for an IOU. Grab your raincheck and get the item at the sale price the next time you shop.

Next, did you know there's a right way to shop a store? The Krazy Coupon Lady says when it comes to supermarkets, your best route is shopping the edges of the store.

Start with produce, dairy, protein and bread and you're less likely to toss impulse buys in your cart.

For other stores, start at the back and work your way to the front. Apparently this technique helps keep you on task.

Compliments go a long way! The bargain team at Thrillist says when you take the time to write your favorite companies to give good feedback, sometimes you'll get a thank you.

They say Trader Joe's, Starbucks and In-N-Out were a few of the companies that responded to letters by sending gift cards or coupons.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania say walking to a store is not only better for your health AND the environment, but it helps you stay focused on what you need because you have to carry it all home.

Finally, signing up for loyalty cards, being armed with mobile coupon apps, and always asking for a price match are always some of your best weapons.
