2 people are dead after a shooting in a Newark apartment complex.

NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- Police have identified the two men killed in a shooting inside an apartment complex in Newark, Delaware.

Officers identified the victims as 32-year-old Brian Eller and 20-year-old Lahmeer Carter, both of New Castle.

Shots were fired on Vinings Way around 7:30 p.m. Monday inside The Vinings Apartments filled with dozens of families.

"I was watching TV and we muted the TV and we heard like six more go off. I got six kids so I'm worried," resident Jaime Ellis said.

Police rushed to the scene to find the two men shot several times.

James Jones' grandkids were inside his home just feet away from where the gunfire sparked.

"They say they heard the noise, but they didn't know what it was. See, they don't hang out here. I keep my family in the house. They come out and they play once in a while, but other than that if I'm not around, I don't want them out here," Jones said.

A police dog and crime unit investigators went to work as detectives talked with residents who say there have been drug issues in this community.

"Nobody should get hurt; it shouldn't come down to this at all," Ellis said.

Possible family members also showed up and visibly distraught, trying to learn if the men shot were their loved ones.

Jones is just thankful his grandkids are safe.

"This is life. You never know what people are doing. I stay in my lane. Everybody else stay in theirs. We can get along real good," Jones said.

Police say the investigation is in the preliminary stages. No suspects have been identified.
