SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Two people were killed and a police officer was injured in a house blaze in South Philadelphia early Thursday morning.
The fire broke out just before 1:30 a.m. on the 400 block of Daly Street.
Fire devoured the home, killing the couple who lived there.
Neighbor Allen Ferreri explained the frantic moments after the fire erupted.
"Our neighbor was thoughtful enough to come banging on our door and let us know there was a fire next door and I quickly rushed to get her out," he said nodding to the woman beside him.
Another neighbor, Allen West, tells us, "Came out and I saw flames shooting out the windows."
The couples' bodies were found inside. Both were in their 60's.
West says, "I talked to them earlier that day."
Philadelphia Fire Department Executive Chief Clifford Gilliam says, "One police officer had attempted to enter the dwelling to rescue the occupants. That police officer sustained some burn injuries and was also transported by his coworkers to the hospital."
Fire officials say this blaze started on the first floor and spread to the second floor before firefighters were able to get it under control.
Allen Ferreri lives right next door to the fire. He shot video as he stood watching his neighbors' home go up in flames.
"We thought for sure our house would catch on fire. It was really bad," he said.
This morning, while he is thankful to firefighters for saving his home, his thoughts are with his neighbors' family.
Ferreri says, "It makes you realize that life is short and nothing is promised tomorrow or today."
Fire officials say it doesn't appear the home had any working smoke alarms.
