Authorities say a driver was impaled after he lost control of his vehicle and struck two pedestrians in Camden.

CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Authorities say a driver was impaled after he lost control of his vehicle and struck two pedestrians in Camden.

It happened around 7:45 p.m. Friday near 7th and Spruce streets.

Initial reports are that a male driver was behind the wheel when his vehicle struck a man and a woman.

The driver was impaled through the mid-section with what's believed to be a pipe.

He was also trapped inside the wreckage for nearly an hour.

He was extricated and taken to Cooper University Hospital. No word on his condition.

The male pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The female pedestrian was seriously injured but is expected to recover.

Police are investigating what sparked the crash.
