Folks find ways to cope with heat in New Jersey

BURLINGTON CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- It's day two of a potential spring heat wave in the Delaware Valley.

Truth be told, it started out a beautiful morning with a nice breeze blowing. But as the sun beat down and the day got longer, things have really heated up.

"I'm actually here on vacation so I didn't bring that many summer clothes, and this is like the best I got for today," Alex Edge of Hampton, Virginia said.

"It was a little too quick for me. I wish it would have just staved off at 70 for a couple weeks," Ricardo Coke of Trenton, New Jersey said.

Near the Riverline on Hamilton Avenue in Trenton, we found contractors manning the weed whackers, cutting down well over a foot of growth.

Jay Carr bought new lightweight pants and a thin bright green shirt knowing he'd be working outdoors in the heat.

"I got a haircut too because you just got to get rid of everything you can to get the heat away from you," Carr said.

"I drink a lot of water and I get in the shade when I can. You know, wear the hat, sunscreen, all that," maintenance worker Matt Donnelly said.

At a garage on Canal Street in Trenton, a mechanic was already sweating at 10 a.m.

"Today is hot and like 92, I think. It's hot. Yesterday was so hot too," Andres Chipix said.

When we stopped in Burlington City to get some gas for our news van, we ran into Larry Smith, who is grateful there's an overhang to shade him when he's pumping fuel.

"7 o'clock this morning, I was getting opened up and I walked out into the sun, and it was like wow, it's going to be really hot today," Larry Smith of American Tire Company said.

It's opening day for the restaurant at Curtin's Wharf and Marina. While crews are pulling boats out of winter storage to put in the water, owner Carroll Curtain says sitting on the Delaware River is the best place to be on a hot day like this.

"On the river there's always a natural wind, and it just comes right off the water, so it's 10 cooler here. So it's just the best to be on the river when it's hot," Curtain said.
