EVESHAM TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A standoff in Burlington County has ended peacefully after nearly seven hours.

The Evesham Police Department responded to the Nieuw Amsterdam Apartments on the unit block of North Maple Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a suicidal male.

Arriving officers attempted to make contact with the man.

Police say a shot was fired by someone inside the apartment. No officers were injured and they did not return fire, police say.

The apartment building was evacuated and a perimeter was established.

After approximately seven hours of negotiations, the New Jersey State Police Teams Unit was safely removed the man from the apartment.

He has been identified as 54-year-old Jeffrey Wass of Marlton.

Wass was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for medical evaluation.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
