EAST MOUNT AIRY (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating a double homicide in the East Mount Airy section.

Police say a neighbor discovered a man and woman sitting in a car with gunshot wounds to the head.

She said as she got closer to the car, she knew something wasn't right.

The woman who was visibly shaken did not want to show her face.

She made the gruesome discovery while walking on the 1000 block of Sydney Street to her daughter's home.

"It's upsetting. I am shook. They were clearly dead, just the way she was laying there," she said.

Late Sunday night, police hauled away the Chrysler sedan where the 23-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were executed.

Both victims were pronounced dead at 5 p.m.

Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark said, "It does appear that the shooting happened inside the car, it appears the shooter was in the back seat, shot the male, then shot the female, then got out and fled from this location."

Both were shot in the back of the head, and detectives say it's likely the victims knew their killers.

It's not clear when the actual murder took place, and how long until they were discovered, and it's left residents unnerved.

Brian Price of Mount Airy said, "I was just walking the block last night and wasn't aware there were two bodies in the car."

"Nope never, never seen anything like this, not in this neighborhood," Alan Bates of Mount Airy said.

The woman who found the victims, says she didn't recognize them as being from the neighborhood. So it's not clear what they were doing here, but anyone with information about their killer is asked to call the police.
