SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police have identified the man who was charged in the sexual assault and death of his 1-year-old stepson.

Saleem Salaam, 24, is charged with murder and related offenses.

Police were called to the 1700 block of Conestoga Street in Southwest Philadelphia around 5:30 p.m. on June 7 for the report of an unresponsive child.

Arriving officers were met by Salaam, who told them the 1-year-old child was upstairs and unresponsive.

Officers, along with firefighters, went upstairs in the home and found the boy lying on the floor without a pulse.

Medics transported the 1-year-old to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the attending physician noted multiple bruises on the child and signs of sexual assault.
