I-76 project to impact daytime traffic this week, then moves to night

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (WPVI) -- PennDOT work on the Schuylkill Expressway will impact your commute during the day for this week and then during the night for the rest of the summer.

This week, crews are inspecting the travel lanes looking for weak spots on the Expressway from the Blue Route to City Avenue.

"They are marking out places where they need to be patched or make some necessary repairs. The reason why they're doing it in the day is they don't want to miss anything," Brad Rudolph of PennDOT said.

The daytime efforts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. are expected to last till Friday.

Then next Sunday, the action moves to nights with actual patching, milling, and resurfacing for the $21-million project on the Montgomery County portion of the heavily-used Expressway

"It will be a nighttime operation from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning weeknights, and maybe a little bit later on the weekends through October, every single day, that's the resurfacing part," Rudolph said.

But to get to that smooth new surface, drivers will have deal with the dayside first.

PennDOT, however, is trying to minimize the backups.

On Monday morning, they actually pulled the inspection crew briefly to let backed up traffic flow.

"They were working eastbound around 476, it backed up all the way to 202, we made the call to pull them off for a little bit until traffic was moving again," Rudolph said.

The plan for Tuesday involves intermittent closings eastbound between the Blue Route and City Avenue.

Westbound closings will come on Wednesday and Thursday.

And closings will come in both directions Friday in and around the Blue Route interchange.
