PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It's happens once a year, and many folks mark the occasion doing fun activities on the first day of summer.

The sun is shining. The flowers blooming. So many reasons to love the summer season.

School is off which means even more visitors are flocking to town...what with US news and world report just naming Philadelphia the number two city to visit in the country. The museum's, the liberty bell, independence mall, and beyond.

"We are trying to find the liberty bell. We're just seeing the sights around Philadelphia," Danny Morris of Oklahoma said.

Hopkins family of Washington, D.C. said, "See sights in Philadelphia and then we are going to Buffalo, NY to Lego convention and then up to Niagara Falls."

A run on the Art Museum steps and a snapshot with the Rocky statue are also popular tourist stops. The Alexanders are in from Arkansas- and tried to make their Rocky tribute authentic, within reason.

"I really wanted to come here in sweats with the headband but couldn't make that happen today," Alexander family of Arkansas said.

In town or out, keeping busy is a key. No class for kids means finding other activities.

Kristin McKenna of Graduate Hospital said, "Couple camps for the kids this summer. Theater camp, couple sports camps, knitting camp."

Cali Vasquez of North Philadelphia said, "You gotta find more stuff for them to do in the summertime than just be home or at the daycare."

Over in Rittenhouse Square, people and pooches were enjoying the shade, but perhaps none more than Romeo.

His water dish close by, his mind perhaps on the cooler months.

"He's a Samoyed so he has a lot of fur. He prefers to come to Rittenhouse in the winter when there's a lot of snow here, but he'll come in the summer and lie under the bench and take it easy," Lindsey Harteis of Rittenhouse Square said.

A lot to do around town but of course a favorite summer pastime is swimming.

City pools start opening Thursday.
