KENSINGTON (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a man was gunned down in front of his girlfriend and their friend.

23-year-old Nino Rivera and the two witnesses were standing at the corner of D and Allegheny streets in Kensington.

Police say the gunman walked right up to them around 11:20 p.m. Sunday, shot Rivera once in the forehead, then fled the scene.

The woman and the other man were not hurt.

Rivera, of the 3900 block of North Franklin Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe this was a surprise ambush.

The motive for the murder is unknown.

25th District officers responded to the 500blk of East Allegheny Avenue at around 11:21pm for a report of a shooting. Once there, police located the victim, ID'ed as 23yo Nino Rivera of the 3900blk of North Franklin Street lying on the highway with gunshot wounds to the back and front of his head.

Medic 23 pronounced the victim dead on scene at 11:23pm. There is no suspect description or motive or arrests at this time. The investigation is ongoing with homicide detectives.
