2 women sought for violent Upper Darby robberies

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- Police are seeking two women who are accused of committing a series of violent robberies in Upper Darby, Pa.

The pair may also have a getaway driver.

Two of the victims were women visiting from Ecuador and were robbed outside a home last Friday.

52-year-old Marta Chacon and 86-year-old Maria Cardenas told us they never expected to be robbed at gunpoint here in the United States. Nephew Alex Cueva translated from Spanish.

"They imagined, like, good things about this country. They said they never think about this happening in this country," Cueva said.

A surveillance camera outside a home on the unit block of Kent captured images of that incident.

Police say the suspects pointed a gun at the two victims, and the 86-year-old resisted. The suspects then hit her on the arm and she dropped her purse containing $700 in cash.

"She, Maria, doesn't want the woman to take the bag, so the woman took out a gun... and punched her," said Cueva.

The suspects also took $200 and a phone from the other victim.

Police say the women who committed the crime match the same description of suspects in the robberies of two cab drivers earlier in the week, on the evening of June 19th.

In that incident, police say a cab was summoned to the 200 block of Copley Road.

One female suspect started talking to the cab driver.

One of the women entered the cab and put a gun to the driver's head and took about $100 in cash and a cell phone.

Two hours later, the exact same crime happened again, this time in the 100 block of Glendale.

In that case, the driver was robbed of $200.

"There's no doubt that the two of these individuals who committed these robberies are the same ones," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "I want to get them off the street as quickly as I can."

Police believe the suspects are using are coming and going in a newer, dark-gray sedan, possibly a Hyundai.

Police haven't had any other similar incidents before or after. No one was hurt in any of the incidents but police are concerned that could change if the suspects strike again.
