NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. (WPVI) -- The area was hit by heavy rain overnight and into Saturday morning, flooding streets across the Jersey shore.

The storm brought enough rain to submerge streets and stall several cars.

In Wildwood the rains were especially heavy.

Action News spoke to one family trying to get out of town before sun up.

They weren't having any luck.

"It is horrible. Stay off the road, it is flooded all the way up to my driver's middle of the door. Stay off the road if you can." Dawn Tonner of Wildwood said.

That was around 5 a.m. Saturday. But since then the rain has stopped.

But now we're seeing the results.

Park Avenue near 26th street in Wildwood was severely flooded.

We spoke with Sarah Fullerton from North Wildwood who tried to get to work at Acme, but she stalled.

"This morning I thought I was going to have a nice drive to work and then all of a sudden I noticed that the flooding was 4 feet past the door, and I tried to drive out to work and didn't happen," She said.

She did walk in. But she says this morning activity has been limited.

"No one is coming to work today, so I'm kind of just standing here looking for something to do," Fullerton said.

But the flooding wasn't an inconvenience to everyone.

"I just watched some of the knuckle heads go through and get stuck," Greg Diemidio of Wildwood said.

I guess if you're someone like Greg Diemidio who has a Ford Excursion SUV, the water was still no match.

But he says he was being careful, others in cars not so much.

"What it is - they're blasting through it and it's getting in through the engine and they're stalling the little cars," Diemidio said.

Another point I want to bring up, something a viewer brought to my attention that's if you're driving through these streets, go slow.

You don't want to create bi waves and ripples that can go up into people's homes and businesses to create further damage.

The National Weather Service says nearly six inches fell in Atlantic City, while 2 to 5 inches of rain was reported in nearby Cape May County.

Officials say most of the flood waters had started to recede by late Saturday morning. Forecasters say more rain was expected Saturday afternoon, but no further flooding was expected.
