CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- Supporters are calling on Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf to save Cheyney University.

A group called "Heeding Cheyney's Call" rallied outside the governor's Philadelphia office in Center City on Tuesday morning.

Founded in 1837, Cheyney is the oldest historically black university in the country.

Financial cuts and dwindling enrollment mean Cheyney could lose its accreditation come September 1.

Supporters including Councilman David Oh say Cheyney is not just an important institution to Pennsylvania, but to the country as well.

"Our government needs to respond to the fact that Cheyney is a symbol, a historic symbol, and has a mission today as it did then, to provide opportunity and education," said Oh.

Cheyney is one of Pennsylvania's 14-state owned universities.
