KENSINGTON (WPVI) -- A man is in surgery after receiving injuries during a shootout with a suspected robber.

The incident occurred just before midnight Friday on the 3100 block of North Front Street.

Philadelphia Police say an unidentified gunman approached a 22-year-old man and demanded money.

The victim resisted and the suspect opened fire, hitting the 22-year-old numerous times.

The young man also pulled out a gun and returned fire, but missed the suspect.

The suspect ran off and remains on the run.

The victim was taken by medics to Temple Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Police say he has a permit to carry a gun.
