CHERRY HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- One of the ten sailors missing from the USS John S. McCain is a young man with ties to New Jersey, Action News has learned.

A prayer chain has been started by members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Cherry Hill for 22-year-old Kenneth Smith, an electronics technician aboard the ship.

Smith has family members who attend the church, but the pastor there would not say more.

His mother, April Brandon of Michigan, says her son always wanted to serve.

"His father was in the Navy, his stepmother had been in the Navy, my father was in the Navy. His father and I couldn't be prouder of our son. He's a great kid. He's a hero," Brandon said.

Kenneth's mother says she still waiting to hear an update from the Navy about her son's whereabouts.
