WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A shooting victim is in critical condition after police say he was involved in a crash with an off-duty Philadelphia officer.

It happened around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the man was shot while in his car in the 1400 block of Alison Street in the Parkside section of Philadelphia.

They say he then tried to drive himself to an area hospital when he broadsided a car driven by an off-duty Philadelphia police officer at 54th and Walnut streets.

Both men were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

The man who had been shot was admitted in critical condition.

The off-duty officer was treated for bumps and bruises and was listed in stable condition.

An investigation is underway into who shot the civilian and why.
