SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say two women nearly lost their lives answering a knock on the front door early Friday morning.

Investigators say someone started banging at the door on the 5400 block of Hadfield Street in Southwest Philadelphia, just after 2 a.m.

The 40-year-old woman who lives there, and her 37-year-old friend, went to the peep hole.

But before they had a chance to decide whether to open the door, someone fired off at least 14 shots.

The homeowner was hit once in the stomach, while her friend was shot in the thigh.

That woman's 3-year-old daughter was also inside, but she wasn't hurt.

"She was not injured. She was very lucky, because inside the property the furniture, the couch, was struck by gunfire multiple times," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police are now reviewing surveillance footage in the area to try to find the gunman.

Both women were expected to make a full recovery.
