NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a deadly ambush in North Philadelphia.

It happened at 12 a.m. Friday.

Police say a 26-year-old man was leaning against a car at 17th and Cumberland streets when a shooter ran up and opened fire.

Investigators say the shooting continued even after the victim had collapsed. The suspect fled on foot.

The victim was picked up by a private vehicle, which was later stopped by police.

Officers saw the wounded man in the back seat and rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are working to determine who shot and the man and why.
