Safe sleep campaign for infants
Safe sleep campaign for infants. Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on September 26, 2017.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The name of the campaign is Same Room, Different Beds, Better Rest for All.

The goal of the campaign is to protect young lives.

It's a message Jasmine Pitt, with her daughter Leilani, is happy to share, and one that's now the focus of a new public health campaign in Philadelphia..

Health Commissioner Doctor Tom Farley says the infant mortality rate in the city is 7.8%, that's higher than the national average, 5.8%.

Most sleep-related deaths happen when infants sleep on couches or share the bed with parents. They can be inadvertently smothered and their airways blocked.

The Same Room, Different Bed Campaign features real parents and their babies practicing safe sleep.

"Babies should always sleep in a crib or pack-n-play and that crib or pack-n-play should only have in it a baby - no pillows or bumpers, no toys, no blankets and a reminder babies should sleep on their backs," Dr. Farley said.
