Sleeping pill concerns for senior citizens
Sleeping pill concerns for senior citizens. Registered Nurse Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on September 27, 2017.

There is a worrisome trend among older Americans having trouble sleeping.

A survey from the University of Michigan shows out of 1,000 older adults, 60-percent say they occasionally take a sleeping pill, painkiller or over-the-counter drug to help them fall asleep.

But in many cases, they don't tell their healthcare provider.

For seniors from the age of 65 to 80-years-old, the use of some medications can lead to an increased risk for dizziness, confusion, and even falling.

It can also interact with other drugs they're taking.

Of course, not sleeping also comes with problems. But you should talk with your doctor if you're having problems sleeping before popping a pill.
