PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Fire safety begins with education and awareness. 6abc has teamed up with local firefighters for Operation 6abc: Save a Life for its 26th year.

We all know that seconds can mean the difference between life and death and a smoke alarm can buy you that crucial time.

Smoke alarms distribution kicked off earlier Tuesday.

Ten thousand smoke alarms donated by Kidde were handed out to over 140 fire departments in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

6abc is the proud sponsor of this event. In fact, 6abc President and general manager Bernie Prazenica and our very own Karen Rogers will be speakers at the event.

6abc has also teamed up with the folks over at the Home Depot as well as the Tri-State Toyota Dealers Association. Each has lent their support to make this event possible.

Capt. Tony Saltar, Vineland Fire Department said, "To save lives, that's most important. To alert the people to make sure that they have one in the house and to send guys out to make sure that they check them as they go."

Bob McCormick, Tri-State Toyota Dealers Association said, "Kidde has donated over 10,000 smoke alarms with sealed batteries with a 10-year warranty. It's just a terrific thing that everybody gets together and they support this."
