2nd arrest in theft of bicycles from Wounded Warriors Project

HUNTING PARK (WPVI) -- Another arrest has been made in a theft that targeted the men and women who put their lives on the line for our country.

The stolen merchandise was intended for veterans, and now those items are on their way back into the right hands.

Friday night the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Unit along with the Philadelphia Highway Patrol made a second bust in the case.

And Detective Jack Logan told Action News there's another arrest on the way.

"We're going to get all the stuff back for them," Logan said, "and expect to have all the bikes back by the weekend."

In all, nine bicycles and bike parts were stolen from the Wounded Warrior Project last weekend. They were all going to be donated to vets.

The items were in a U-Haul truck, which volunteers parked at the Renaissance Hotel near the Philadelphia International Airport Friday night in preparation for a soldier ride.

When the volunteers returned to the parking lot Saturday morning the truck was gone.

Thanks to quick police work, four of the bikes were recovered earlier this week in Northeast Philadelphia.

Action News was there for the raid.

We were there Friday as well when the stolen U-Haul was recovered in the 3100 block of Woodhaven Road.

Logan says, surprisingly, the suspects are stepping up.

"People are doing the right thing let's just say that," he said.

After the truck was towed to the police impound lot in Hunting Park, the bed was opened, and the bike parts were still packed in their cases.

"It's very important for us - especially being a member of the Philadelphia Police Department - and it's the least I can do and our department can do," Logan said. "It's for the veterans who put their life out the on the line to keep us free."

Logan said he confident the five remaining bikes will be recovered this weekend.
