5 families displaced after fire damages homes in Chester, Pa.

CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- The American Red Cross is assisting five families after fire tore through several row homes in Chester, Delaware County.

The blaze broke out at 1:30 a.m. Monday in a vacant row house in the 400 block of Bickley Place.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames on the first and second floors.

"It was flaming, flaming! You could smell it," Ka'Leisha Henson told Action News.

Henson rushed to the scene after learning her aunt's home was on fire.

"The fire spread to the house next door along the roof line," said Chester Fire Company Battalion Chief Stacy Landrum.

In all, 4 houses were damaged by flames, and a fifth one had some smoke damage.

No one was injured.

Just days ago, a different fire started in the unoccupied home right next door.

"We had a fire here in number 420 the other night," said Landrum. "That's still under

investigation. This one's still under investigation also, so I'm not going to comment as

far as cause and origin are concerned until the police do their job."

Chester City's fire commissioner was on the scene Monday morning.

Five families, including 8 adults and 11 children, are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
