Authorities say a middle school student in northeastern Pennsylvania is facing charges after a loaded gun was found in her locker.

Assistant Police Chief Gail Struss tells the (Allentown) Morning Call other students at South Mountain Middle School found out about the gun on Thursday. They notified school officials, who found the weapon.

The girl was taken into custody and is being charged with possession of a weapon on school property and related charges.

Struss says she doesn't know why the girl took the gun to school or if she made any threats. She also did not have details on when police were called to the school.

School officials say students were safe during the entire investigation.

The Allentown School District released the following statement Thursday night:

"On December 1, there was an incident at South Mountain Middle School that required an investigation by the Allentown Police Department. As soon as the incident was reported to school administration, safety procedures were implemented. Although this incident did involve a weapon, all students and staff were safe at all times.
