SYDNEY (WPVI) -- An Australian beach is closed today where a surfer had a close encounter with a shark.

Lifeguards in boats and jet skis patrolled the waters off Sydney after the incident.

The surfer says a four-foot-long shark knocked him off his board.

"He hooked me on the side of my board here and then we rolled. He swam to come back around a second time, came up under my legs and by then I realised that I had seen what I had seen, that it was a shark," he said.

Lifeguards closed the beach as a precaution.

But that didn't stop surfers from getting right back into water.
