People are waking up to a mess in Northeast Philadelphia where a water main break flooded the road.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- People woke up to a mess in Northeast Philadelphia, where a broken water main flooded a neighborhood.

The break happened sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning near the intersection of Summerdale Avenue and Knorr Street.

Utility crews arrived and were able to shut off the water to the 8-inch main by 3 a.m.

Forty homes have been left without water service.

Residents were also dealing with mud and debris. Several cars were left sitting in mud.

Repair work was expected to begin later Wednesday morning.

There was no immediate word when water service would be restored to the affected customers.

Neighborhood traffic was being detoured around the area.
