A car slammed into a high voltage transmission tower in New Castle, Delaware before bursting into flames.

NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- New Castle County Police are investigating after a vehicle struck the base of a high voltage electrical transmission tower and caught fire.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of Laurel Lane and Rosehill Road in the community of Rosetree Hunt in Newark.

Upon arrival, police found an unoccupied 2015 Nissan Versa on fire.

Officers located the 40-year-old driver, who lived in a community nearby, using the vehicle's registration.

Chopper 6 HD was overhead after a car slammed into the base of a high voltage electrical tower.

Police tell Action News the driver lost control and crashed into one of the base legs of the tower, which is owned by Delmarva Power.

Police said the driver told them he had an unknown medical condition which may have contributed to the accident.

The driver reported minor injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

The driver was cited for leaving the scene of the accident and failing to report the incident to police.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.
