A 3-year-old boy is in very critical condition after being struck by a motorist who police say was assaulted after the incident in the Logan section of Philadelphia.

It happened before 5:30 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Wagner Avenue.

"A 3-year-old male darted out between two parked cars," said Philadelphia Police Captain Nicholas Brown.

The boy, identified by family members as Donnell Banks, was struck by a grey Mazda hatchback and sent airborne, landing underneath a red Dodge Durango parked along the street.

"I turned back around," resident Denise Williams told Action News. "I could see a little boy flying up and going underneath a car."

Police say the driver of the Mazda immediately stopped and went to check on the boy.

That's when he was assaulted by a group of men.

"In this case, this guy was in an accident, he did the right thing, he stopped, but was assaulted by unknown persons," Brown said. "He was out of his car and some of his neighbors came to his rescue and placed him inside their vehicle until police arrived."

Witnesses say the driver appeared to be very remorseful.

"He was kind of shaken up, he was really shaken up, he was scared. I guess the little boy was real little and he says 'I didn't see him, I'm sorry,'" Williams said.

So far, no charges have been filed in the case.
