NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A child is hospitalized after falling from a second floor window of a home in North Philadelphia.

Emergency crews were called shortly after 10:30 Thursday morning to the 100 block of West Huntingdon Street.

Authorities say a 6-year-old boy fell from the window onto the pavement below.

Neighbor Randall Melzer heard the commotion as he worked at the auto body shop across the street.

"He was awake and crying. I believe he was crying for his mother. He was favoring his knees and rubbing the back of his head like he may have hit the concrete with his head," Melzer said.

The boy was in the care of a babysitter. The woman was watching the boy and her granddaughter. Action News is told the woman and the boy are not related.

The grandmother told police the boy had a tendency to take out the screens in the windows and it may have allowed him to fall through the window when he fell off the chair.

"I looked up and everyone is yelling at the second floor window. There's an older Hispanic woman standing there and they were telling her 'your kid fell out the window,' Melzer said.

Paramedics transported the boy to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children with head, neck and back injuries. He is expected make a full recovery.

The Police Department's Special Victims Unit says the grandmother will not be charged and this appears to be simply an accident.
