Police say a couple was robbed and then the boyfriend was shot in the Philadelphia's Frankford section early Thursday morning.

FRANKFORD (WPVI) -- Police say a couple was robbed and the boyfriend shot in the Philadelphia's Frankford section early Thursday morning.

The incident happened just before 1:00 a.m. Thursday on the 5700 block of Frankford Avenue.

A 28-year-old woman and her 24-year-old boyfriend were walking down the street when a vehicle pulled up beside them.

The boyfriend told police a passenger got out of the car and announced a robbery.

The couple took off running towards Wissinoming Park, the woman dropped her purse and the robbers fired three shots at them.

The boyfriend was hit in the shoulder. He was rushed to Torresdale Hospital in stable condition.

Responding police officers saw a man riding his bicycle on Frankford Avenue with what appeared to be a purse in his hand.

They apprehended the 24-year-old man and he was positively identified by the couple.

Police say he is a suspect but not the shooter. Police believe the gunman is still on the loose.

The robbery remains under investigation.
