CORNWALL, N.Y. (WPVI) -- Police allege a woman killed her fiance by sabotaging his kayak in a scheme to collect insurance money. His body was found on Saturday - more than a month after the trip.
Vincent Viafore, 46, had been missing since the April 19th trip on New York's Hudson River. His body was found floating in the area he went missing.
Angelika Graswald is being held on $3 million bail, charged with second degree murder.
After Viafore's disappearance, Graswald told a New York news station that she saw him go under the water.
"He was trying to paddle the waves because things were getting crazy, and then I just saw him flip," she said at the time.
However, police say she later admitted to tampering with Viafore's boat so it would take on water. Investigators said "She knew those actions would contribute to his death."
Graswald's attorneys claim she is innocent, saying this is was an accident and her confession to police was forced.
They also say this whole situation may be the result of a "cultural misunderstanding." Graswald is from Latvia.
"She comes from a society where weakness, whether it's in the form of sorrow, grief or fear, is frowned upon culturally and socially," said Richard Portale.
As for the motive: prosecutors say Graswald did it for two life insurance policies worth $250,000.
Investigators also said she even "talked about what she could possibly do with the money."
