PRINCETON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A homeowner's pet was killed after a tree fell on a home in Princeton, Mercer County.

It happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday on the 500 block of Mercer Road.

Police arrived to the home to find the tree had fallen on top of the residence.

The home sustained heavy damage and was rendered uninhabitable.

The homeowner, Joseph Guarnaccia, was not hurt, but a portion of the tree struck and injured his dog.

The dog later died from those injuries.

PSE&G responded to the home to shut off the utilities.

Officials say high winds caused the tree to fall.
