UPPER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a crash in Upper Merion that claimed the life of an elderly woman Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 10:00 a.m. on the 700 block of North Gulph Road.

Police say the driver of a 2007 Chevrolet van told them that he had just turned onto North Gulph Road from Route 23 when he looked in his rear-view mirror and saw a Burgundy Acura MDX behind him.

He told officers the Acura swerved onto the shoulder of the roadway, ran over a street sign, and then swerved back onto the roadway and struck his van.

He says the Acura then swerved back onto the shoulder of the roadway and up a hill where it struck a large tree.

The elderly driver of the Acura was taken to Paoli Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released.

The driver of the van was not injured.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
