Fire crews rescue man who jumped into sewer in Hunting Park

HUNTING PARK (WPVI) -- Philadelphia fire crews rescued a man who became stuck after jumping into a sewer in Hunting Park.

The neighborhood erupted in cheers as 46-year-old David Barr was pulled to safety.

Chopper 6 HD was over the rescue scene Friday on the 900 block of West Pike Street.

Police say just before 5 p.m. they got the call a man had jumped into the sewer, falling 10 feet before crawling into an 18-inch, horizontal drain pipe and getting stuck.

The highly-skilled Heavy Rescue 1 team suited up and went into the sewer to retrieve Barr.

"The air quality is not good as you can imagine in a combined-storm, sanitary sewer," said Commissioner Adam Thiel.

After more than two-and-a-half hours underground, he was pulled out at 7:30 p.m.

Barr was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

Officials won't say how he ended up in the sewage system.

We're told the teams that went in after him are spending the night detoxing in the shower.
