Fire damages duplex in Merchantville

MERCHANTVILLE, N.J. (WPVI) -- Flames and smoke damaged a duplex in Merchantville, Camden County.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Poplar Avenue.

Crews were met with thick smoke coming from the home.

One person was rescued from inside. That person suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to an area hospital.

The fire was declared under control within a half hour.

Both levels of the duplex home suffered water damage.

The Red Cross is assisting a family of five who lived upstairs.

The family that lived downstairs was able to stay with other relatives for the night. They expect to return to their home Thursday.

No word on a cause for the fire.
