WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 7-year-old girl was injured after being struck by a stray bullet in West Philadelphia.

At first, it appeared she had been hit by shattered glass but now investigators say, a bullet pierced her skull.

It happened just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of Haverford Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were met by the victim's parents who were standing next to their red 2013 Chevy Impala with a shattered driver's rear window.

The father, 26, told police he was pulling up to his apartment when he slowed down, put his flashers on and then stopped.

As he did, a dark sedan following behind him, sped up and passed their vehicle.

The father heard a pop and the rear window of the vehicle shattered.

Their three girls, ages 3, 4, and 7 that were in the back seat began to scream and cry.

He said his 7-year-old daughter placed her hands on her head and said she was hurt.

The mother, 26, saw her daughter's head was bleeding and called 911.

Medics transported the girl to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she was listed in stable condition.

Police continue to investigate.
