NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a shooting in Northeast Philadelphia that left a man hospitalized in critical condition.

It happened before 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Van Kirk Street.

Action News is told after the gunfire erupted, a friend tried to drive the victim, who had been shot three times, to the hospital.

But the friend got lost and called police.

Officers met the pair in the 6500 block of Horrocks Street, then rushed the wounded 23-year-old man to Einstein Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The victim's friend told police the victim was being robbed when he was shot, but the friend couldn't tell police what was taken.

An investigation is underway.
