A homeowner walked in a burgarly in progress.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A homeowner is recovering after being attacked upon walking in on a burglary in progress, police say.

It happened around 6:45 p.m. Monday along the 2300 block of Emerson Street in Northeast Philadelphia.

Police say the 49-year-old homeowner entered the bedroom and was confronted by the burglar that was in the middle of ransacking the room.

A violent struggle erupted between the homeowner and the burglar, who was armed with a tire iron.

The burglar was able to escape with an undetermined amount of jewelry.

Police are dusting the home for fingerprints.

The homeowner was rushed to Nazareth Hospital for treatment of injuries to the head and neck.
