Police say this may have been the result of a gun battle.

FELTONVILLE -- A number of homes and cars were struck by bullets overnight in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia.

Police say it happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

There was damage in the 300 block of E. Rockland Street and on nearby Ormes Street.

Police say the damage may have been the result of some kind of gun battle, because the bullets seemed to come from opposite directions.

Neighbors believe this is part of a war over drug turf.

Kevin and Sharon Vaughn were woken up by the sounds of gunfire.

"We were sleeping, and all of a sudden it was just 'pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,'" said Sharon.

"As I heard the shots ring out, I thought it was some fireworks left over from the Fourth people were shooting off," Kevin said.

The Vaughn's property was not hit, but for husband and parent Adan Rosario, it was a near death experience.

His parents live next door and their new car had both driver and passenger side front windows shot out.

"To shoot that randomly, it's just crazy. I don't understand that mindset at all," Rosario said.

The wild gunfire spilled into his house where he and his wife were sleeping, and so were their children.

He showed us where the bullet holes went into his walls. The gunfire fortunately did not kill or injure his family - or anyone else on the block.

"Like 'pop, pop' and I told my girlfriend to get down. And then were heard about another six or seven shots," Rosario said. "And then we heard a car drive off."

Police say they have assigned a special investigative unit to this case and others like it in the area.
