VIDEO: Kids at West Philadelphia school make video to say We Are Here
Some charter school students in West Philadelphia are reaching out to a hit singer.

The song "We Are Here" is a single by Grammy winner Alicia Keys, but it's also a campaign she launched. And students at Universal Daroff Charter School in West Philadelphia wanted to send a message to the world about why they are here.

6th grader Sameira Goines says, "It's important to get your education."

And 6th grader Eric Barnes tells us, "We all want to go to college."

Music teacher Kendra Balmer explains, "Even the younger kids were saying things like, 'I'm here to make a change in the world,' instead of 'I'm here to eat lunch today.'"

Balmer helped put together a video featuring teachers and students and what messages they want to convey.

The finished project was presented in a special assembly and will be sent to Alicia Keys on her Twitter account.

The hope is that she'll retweet it to her millions of followers.

When asked what Alicia might think of it, 2nd grader Kyla Skinner says, "She's going to be like, 'This is amazing!'"

To inspire middle schoolers to think about their futures, different organizations and students from local colleges were invited as mentors.

They had some fun performing but some also spoke about setting goals for college.

Miss Lincoln University Kiara Jackson says, "I was just in middle school not too long ago and I was confused. I didn't know if I wanted to go to college, and I didn't have the financial situation. So I want to gear them and guide them, and give them the right advice."

Teachers saw the campaign as a way to keep students focused on their goals.

Dance teacher Martesha Gethers explains, "A lot of times we don't know why we are here. So we get confused and caught up into a lot of things we shouldn't be doing. But if we know our purpose, we achieve it faster."

Of course these kids are hoping to get a retweet by Alicia keys, but the purpose of this program goes beyond that.

6th grader Micaela Moore says, "There may be a problem in the world, but we can also fix it."
