Man critical, driver flees in I-95 crash in Newport

A search is on for the driver.

NEWPORT, Del. (WPVI) -- Delaware State Police are searching for the driver of car that fled a crash which critically injured a man in Newport.

The two vehicle accident occurred around midnight Sunday on I-95 southbound just south of the Route 141 exit.

State Police say two vehicles collided causing one vehicle to run off the roadway and the second vehicle to smash into the guardrail, trapping a male passenger inside.

Police say the driver of the car fled on foot leaving his trapped passenger.

Firefighters freed the passenger who was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical condition suffering extensive damage to his arm and shoulder.

The driver of the vehicle that ran off the roadway was not injured.

Delaware State Police launched a search for the male driver of the car using dogs and a helicopter, but were unable to locate him.
