Mother of baby born on Amtrak train: 'I'm happy I had that experience'

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- An Amtrak train is probably not the first place you think of you when it comes to babies being born.

It certainly wasn't the ideal place for Philadelphia mom, Sheera Lowe, but her bundle of joy just couldn't wait.

"The contractions started getting so bad, I could not go back to my seat, three cars down," said Lowe.

Lowe's water broke on Saturday night as she was headed back to Philadelphia from seeing her husband in North Carolina.

The baby wasn't due until March 4, but when the contractions came, she could only think about one thing.

"This baby's coming," said Lowe.

The train made the unexpected stop and surprise delivery in Aberdeen, Maryland. Other passengers saw what was happening and tried to help.

After the Amtrak train finally came to a stop, Lowe found some comfort when medics rushed on board to help.

"They laid me down on the benches, and the EMT Judy she looked and she said, 'the baby's crowning,' " said Lowe. "I started pushing, I couldn't hold it back any longer."

Three pushes later, a healthy baby girl, Trinity Christina Stokes, entered the world at 6:01 p.m. weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces.

Lowe tells us the child's middle name is the same as a passenger who provided comfort to her throughout her labor and childbirth.

"Looking back, I'm happy I had that experience," said Lowe.

An unexpected experience that will make quite the story to tell when baby Trinity grows up.
