NJ driver facing DUI in crash that injured officer

MONROE TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Officials have charged a man with DUI after a crash that injured a police officer in Monroe Township, New Jersey.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of South Black Horse Pike and Forest Drive.

Authorities say Monroe Township Patrolman Anthony Vezza was conducting a traffic stop on the westbound shoulder when an SUV struck the cruiser and then him.

The driver of the SUV has been identified as 33-year-old Jesse J. Petryk. Police say he was driving under the influence.

Vezza was taken to Cooper University Hospital with a broken leg and knee. He was listed in stable condition.

Two people who were inside the vehicle that was stopped were taken to Kennedy Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Petryk is now facing DUI charges as well as three counts of assault by auto.

Police continue to investigate.
