COBBS CREEK (WPVI) -- A community in Cobbs Creek took time to thank the brave men and women of the Philadelphia Police and Fire departments.

The pews were packed at the Church of Christian Compassion on Sunday morning.

Members were there not just there to praise the Lord, but also to thank and honor members of Philadelphia's public safety community.

The special service featured children sharing their thoughts about Philadelphia's police officers and firefighters.

"I would like to take this moment to say, 'Thank you'" said one presenter.

"I know you all work hard day in and day out and you don't always get appreciated. I thank you for helping keep us safe," said another presenter.

After a summer when police and community members in places like Ferguson, Missouri, were at odds often, this service brought some to tears.

Church members raised their hands in prayer for officers' safety and then gave them hugs to say "Thank you."

For us, this is outstanding. A lot of times we see people at their worst and today seeing people at their best. Getting a 'Thank you' means so much to the officers who are out here every day," said Inspector Verdell Johnson, Philadelphia Police.

After the service, the officers posed for photos and let the kids check out their equipment.

"It gives our kids an up-close view. They're able to touch the cops, to shake their hands, say, 'Thank you' and talk with them," said W. Lonnie Herndon, senior pastor.

The event ended with a fun-filled block party and the hope is that even afterwards, the bond formed between members of the community and law enforcement will last well into the future.
