JUNIATA (WPVI) -- An armed man is in the hospital after being shot by police during a confrontation in the Juniata section of Philadelphia.

It happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday along the 3800 block of Elsinore Street.

Police responded to a home after a report of a suicidal man.

They arrived to find the man sitting in a chair with a large knife to his chest.

Police say they gave the man several commands to drop his weapon, but he did not.

Officers then tased the man who became agitated. They say he pulled the prongs from his body.

He was told again to drop the weapon, police say. Again, he did not, and police tased him for the second time.

Officers say they left the home and the man followed them with the knife.

And that is when officers say they were forced to fire their weapons, striking the man in the torso.

The man then collapses, and officers are able to remove the knife.

Medics responded and transported the suspect to Temple University Hospital.

He is listed in stable but critical condition.

The police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

No officer was injured.
