The Philadelphia Police Department will no longer keep secret the names of officers involved in shootings.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Police Department will no longer keep the names of officers involved in shootings a secret.

Commissioner Charles Ramsey says, from now on, the department will evaluate each incident and release names if no threats have been made against the officer or their family.

The new policy, outlined in an internal memo, is in line with a Justice Department recommendation that police share basic facts and circumstances within 72-hours of a shooting.

The department had been criticized for waiting six months to name the officers involved in the fatal traffic-stop shooting of Brandon Tate-Brown.

Philadelphia has had more than 400 officer-involved shootings since 2007.
